1936 – 2016

FAYETTE — Mary E. Lowe, 79, a resident of Jay, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, at her daughter’s home surrounded by her loving family following a long, courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Sept. 7, 1936, in Orlando, Fla., the daughter of Earl and Lena (Bell) Shope. She graduated from Edgewater High School in 1955 and, on Feb. 12, 1956, married Kirkley Gene Lowe in Orlando, Fla.

Mary was a devoted member of the Roman Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella at St. Rose of Lima in Jay. She was a communicant of Saints Peter and Paul Basilica in Lewiston. Loving, wise and artistically gifted, her many passions included photography, painting, ballroom and square dancing, clogging, playing the organ, making clothing for her family and creating beautiful gardens. In her life she brought beauty, grace and faith into the world through her charity and selfless love.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years; her three sons, Michael David Lowe and his wife, Jo Ann, of Kentucky, Kirkley Gene Lowe Jr. of South Portland, Timothy John Lowe and his wife, Cherrie, of Gardiner; her four daughters, Jeana Marie Lowe of Jay, Rita Kay Bacot of Louisiana, Teresa Diane Gajate and her husband, Pedro, of Hawaii, Mary Dolores Pratt and her husband, Glynn, of Fayette; her brother, James Earl Shope of Florida; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
