LEWISTON – A man was stabbed multiple times late Monday night in a third floor, downtown apartment, Lewiston police said.

The man, who was not identified early Tuesday, was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center from 92 Pine St.

“There was a stabbing, the victim’s been transported to the hospital,” said Sgt. Brian O’Malley, moments after a man was carried on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance.

The man was conscious. He was covered up, moaning loudly and breathing hard. “He was stabbed multiple times,” O’Malley said. But the man was able to talk to police.

Early Tuesday the victim “was patched up,” and talking to police from the hospital, said Sgt. Jim Minkowsky. It did not appear the wounds would be fatal, he said.

Police could not release the name of the man who was stabbed, but did say he is 27 years old. Both the man who was hurt, and the person who allegedly stabbed him, did not live at that apartment, police said. It was not a domestic fight, police said.

No arrests had been made as of early Tuesday. “Right now we’re still looking at various accounts,” Minkowsky said. “We’re still trying to put pieces together. The scene is secured right now.”

Police said they were not looking for a suspect. “Everyone has been brought down to the station,” O’Malley said.
Just after the ambulance pulled away, two or three women left the building and got into cars. “Please keep your phone on,” one said into her cell phone.

The woman told a reporter she did not know the victim or what happened.

Neighbors standing on Pine Street after the incident said there had been arguing and fighting from the apartment. “Oh, there’s been tons of problems. Problems, problems, problems,” said a man who lived on the second floor of the building.

Mike Smith, who lives nearby on Pierce Street, agreed. “There’s been a lot of fighting going on in the last day or two,” he said. His fiancee called police earlier Monday evening to report a domestic disturbance, Smith said. “We were outside walking by. You could tell it was from that house,” he said.

Another neighbor complained: “It’s not a good neighborhood, especially having two kids I’m trying to raise. … There’s never a dull moment on Pierce and Pine.”
