LEWISTON — Remember “Battle Cry of Freedom?” “Goober Peas?” These tunes are among the many that will be presented by The Maine Music Society in  “Songs of the Civil War”  at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 9 and at 3 p.m., May 10, at the Franco Center.

In commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the end of the conflict, the Androscoggin Chorale will strive to inspire with songs from both sides: rousing marching tunes contrasted with pensive reflections of home and loved ones. There will also be renditions of some stirring letters written by native sons on the battlefield.

In addition special guest Gen. Joshua Chamberlain, impersonated by living-history performer Charles W. Plummer, will comment on his role during the war.

Chamberlain is most noted for leading the 20th Maine Regiment in defending Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg, an action that earned him the Medal of Honor. He later served four terms as Maine’s governor and was a professor and president of Bowdoin College.

Tickets are available at www. mainemusicsociety.org or by calling LA Arts at 782-7228.
