KINGSTON, R.I. – Alain Picard ripped a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning to spark a five-run outburst and send Maine to a 6-2 victory over Rhode Island in college baseball action Friday.

The Rams (7-13) led 2-1 entering the final inning. Joe Drapeau and pinch hitter Ryan Quintal singled and moved into scoring position on a passed ball with one out. After an intentional walk, Steve Gambale popped out for the second out before Picard stroked his two-run doubel off of relief pitcher Tom Venedam, who took the loss.

Aaron Izaryk ftollowed Picard’s heroics with a two-run single for the Black Bears (10-6).

Greg Norton scattered six hits over eight innings to improve his record to 3-0. Greg Creek pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two.

Tufts 10, Bates 6

MEDFORD, Mass. – Bates fell behind early and never recovered as Tufts posted a 10-6 victory in the NESCAC season opener.

The Jumbos (6-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead against the winless Bobcats (0-3). Nate Reid’s double highlighted a three-run burst in the fourth for Bates, but Tufts responded with five more runs in its half of the fourth to take control.

Rob Maguire had two hits for Bates. Mike Kinsman was the losing putcher.

Wheaton 6, USM 2

NORTON, Mass. – Southern Maine was limited to one hit after the first inning as Wheaton stopped the Huskies 6-2 Friday.

Wheaton starter Jon Jackson allowed two runs on three hits in the first inning before settling down, allowing only a harmless single by Tyler Delorme in the fifth inning before leaving after eight innings. Jackson walked three and struck out eight.

In the first inning, the Huskies (4-7) loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. The first run scored on Delorme’s fielder’s choice and Paul Tedesco followed with an RBI single.

The Lyons (7-3-1) scored once in the second before chasing starter Sam Hardy with

four more runs in the third inning.
