Lisbon Falls — Citing an uncertain economic climate, officials at Masonite, a manufacturer of wood fiber boards, recently announced the temporary layoff of 19 employees.

The decision was made at the end of last week, according to Sam Pattison, manager of employee relations at the company.

“Current and near future market conditions will not support our production levels,” said Pattison.

The company also scaled back its hours of operation, which typically run throughout the day, seven days a week.

The laid off workers will be hired back “when things pick up,” Pattison said.

“It’s really a sign of the times,” he said about the business’s slowdown. He said the war in Iraq adds to the capriciousness of the economy these days.

Masonite currently employees 150 people.
