FARMINGTON – Selectmen will hear Monday what the town’s Transportation Committee recommends for the High Street and Broadway intersection.

The state Department of Transportation recommended that a four-way stop sign be installed at the intersection. It now has a flashing four-way light, with yellow flashing for Broadway and Perham Street and red light flashing on both sides of High Street. The town had requested a traffic light in 1999 for the intersection. But at the time, DOT didn’t have the money. So the town paid for the flashing light to be installed.

Earlier this year, DOT, which now has $80,000 for the project, held a public hearing to gather feedback on what should be done. People at the hearing didn’t favor a four-way stop sign. Several thought the signal should be left as is and more effort concentrated on fixing the traffic-signal timing for pedestrians crossing at Broadway and Main Street.

The town’s Transportation Advisory Committee has reviewed the DOT’s recommendation and now will make its own at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Municipal Building.

Town Manager Richard Davis said he believed the DOT already did some work on the traffic signal to allow pedestrians to cross Main and Broadway more safely.

A lengthy agenda faces board members with numerous items to consider. Among them are a proposed 2003 sewer budget, bids for a new police cruiser, Fire Rescue first responder license, part-time employees request for benefits, a couple grants and review information presented on municipal charters and town council form of government.
