LEWISTON — The U.S.S. Canberra Association, along with all interested organizations, will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the submarine USS Thresher, which was on sea trials on April 10, 1963, and was lost with all hands off the coast of Massachusetts.

All groups are asked to be at the rear of Yvon’s Car Wash on the Lewiston side of the Longley Bridge at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10.

The group will march at 10 to the middle of the Longley Bridge on the down river side. The invocation will be given by the Rev. Donald L. Miller, commander, USN (Ret.), U.S. Navy Chaplains Corps.

Jerry DerBoghosian and Tom Dow, who was on the search detail for the U.S. Navy at that time, will give comments. A wreath will be thrown into the Androscoggin River honoring “all hands lost at sea.”

“Taps” will be sounded and the ceremony will close with “God Bless America.” The ceremony is open to the public and will be held rain or shine.

For further details contact DerBoghosian at 782-5700 or 353-7435.
