WATERVILLE – The University of Maine at Farmington took advantage of three leadoff walks that led to runs to hold on for a 4-3 win over Colby in baseball action Wednesday.

The Mules (4-5-1) had a 9-4 advantage in hits, but left 10 runners on base as UMF junior pitcher Jeff Casavant worked out of a few jams to pick up the victory.

The Beavers scored (1-4) scored a lone run in the second, two in the third and added a fourth run in the fifth. Colby had leadoff walks in all three innings that led to runs.

Dave Sharland scored twice for UMF. Tom Ventura added double.

USM 12, Bowdoin 10

GORHAM – Junior center fielder Adam Lemieux slammed a two-run homer in the sixth inning to snap a 9-9 tie and propel the University of Southern Maine to a 12-10 win over Bowdoin in the home opener at Towers Field Wednesday afternoon.

After the Polar Bears tied the game in the top of the fifth with three runs against Tip Fairchild and Pat Liddy, the Huskies (7-9) bounced back to regain the lead for good. Pat McCarthy led off with a walk and Lemieux followed with his first home run of the season. USM added an insurance run later in the inning to make it 12-9.

Bowdoin reached Liddy for a run in the sixth before senior Ryan Adams came on to hurl three innings of scoreless, two-hit baseball to earn his second save of the season.

Softball
Plymouth St. 1, Bowdoin 0

BRUNSWICK – Behind the stellar pitching of sophomore Kim Jeffs and hitting of Adriene Harvey, Plymouth State swept Bowdoin in a double-header, 1-0 and 8-3.

The opener was highlighted by Jeff’s three-hit, 15-strikeout performance and a solo home run by Harvey that led off the second inning.

Bowdoin rallied in the ninth with a pair of baserunners, but cold not plate the tying run. Erin Hanley took the tough-luck loss, allowing six hits.

Game 2 saw the Polar Bears take a 3-0 lead behind four hits as Bowdoin chased Plymouth started Rose Eaton. Jeffs came in and shut down the Bears for the remainder, allowing three hits for the rest of the contest.

Thomas 4, Me. Maritime 3

CASTINE – Brindi Riley scored a pair of runs on two hits Wednesday to lead Thomas College to a 4-3 win over Maine Maritime.

Brielle Daggett chipped in with an RBI single for the Terriers (1-10), while Joy Ireland picked up the mound win.

Jessica Clifford led the attack for Maine Maritime with two hits. Hillary Arris went the distance on the hill and was credited with the loss.

Men’s lacrosse
Plymouth State 8, USM 6

GORHAM – Sophomore Steve Skinner netted a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner late in the fourth quarter, to lead Plymouth State to an 8-6 triumph over the University of Southern Maine.

Bobby Dabrieo and Jon

Gagnon also netted two goals each.

Jon Gagne led Southern Maine with a pair of goals, while Matt Butler, Dan Soule, T.J. Bell and Tobey Farrington rounded out the tally. Jeff Lamoreux and Mark Morrisette combined for 15 saves in the loss.
