The Lewiston School Committee recently approved a revised system-wide dress code for all of its students. The new policy bans students from wearing hats, or from wearing clothing that expose upper thighs and stomachs.

Prior to the school committee decision, high school students were surveyed and asked their opinion regarding the “new” more restrictive dress code proposal. Overwhelmingly, LHS students did not support it.

Unfortunately, our views were ignored by the school committee.

I believe that if students are to be surveyed, then the students’ wishes should be considered when making the final decision.

Given the opportunity to decide for ourselves, I believe that most students would not have abused a less restrictive dress code. We do have the ability to use good judgment and good common sense.
