1919 – 2003

LEWISTON – Joe Belanger, 84, of 23 Water St., Lewiston, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 9, at d’Youville Pavilion surrounded by his family.

Born in Dorchester, Mass., March 27, 1919, the son of John and Alexandria Belanger. He was educated in Dorchester schools.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II and was decorated with the Purple Heart for his support at Guadalcanal.

Upon his return from active duty he married the former Viola McBean of Lewiston and had been a resident of this community since and had been a member of St. Mary’s Parish.

He was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans, American Legion Post 31 and a 38-year member of the Teamster’s Union. He retired from St. Johnsbury Trucking after 38 years.

After retiring he worked at K & R Auto Sales driving cars and running errands for 10 years. He really enjoyed his family, his dog, Harley, lottery tickets, coffee and telling stories. Every day he would meet with his friends at Roy’s to have coffee, scratch tickets and good conversation.

Survivors include his four daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Lu-Ann) Parker of Lewiston, Mrs. David (Janice) Hiatt of Apex, N.C., Mrs. Peter (Sharon) Coffin and Mrs. William (Nancy) Marquis both of Freeport; one son, Thomas Belanger of New Gloucester; one brother, Ronald Belanger of Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years; his parents; six sisters; and three brothers.
