I recently heard that antiwar demonstrators defaced the property of American Legion Post 5 in Waterville, specifically a tank and six flag poles. I think this is outrageous and feel that a clear message needs to be sent to these antiwar protesters that destruction of other people’s property is not within their rights under freedom of speech.

I wonder if it will be safe for our soldiers to return home or if they will be treated in a similar manner to our Vietnam veterans.

I think it is disgusting that someone is making phone calls pretending to be a veterans group collecting money. I have been told that veteran groups do not solicit money or goods over the phone. It is all done by word of mouth or because a person seeks them out to see how they can help.

On a happier note, as a member of American Legion Post 153, I want to thank the Lewiston-Auburn Veterans Council for sponsoring a “Line Your Street” yellow ribbon campaign in our area. It is a widespread goal to have every community from Maine to Washington, D.C., line their streets with yellow ribbons by Armed Forces Day, May 17.

I agree with the groups that think it would be wonderful to keep this campaign going until all our troops return home, replacing worn out ribbons with fresh ones as time goes on.

We must make peace, not antiwar demonstrations.
