The event notes the diversity and creativity of students and faculty.

FARMINGTON – Instead of attending class on Wednesday, April 16, University of Maine at Farmington students Alison Duncan, Crystal Hawley and Marge Adams of Farmington, Christine Mangiapia of Vienna, and Shelli-Jo Pellitier of East Waterboro, will discuss what they found as they interviewed and listened to women who run nearby businesses.

Instead of taking an exam, Ryan Moore of Cape Elizabeth and Pratigya Uphadyaya of Kathmandu, Nepal, will lead a tour of the new Web site, “Green Explorations,” where there is information about upcoming events, the Farmington campus, green buildings and green government.

Instead of studying financial analysis, Rebecca Picott of South Berwick, and Dennis Wood of Sedgewick will make a powerpoint presentation about the vocabulary, techniques and stages of financial statement analysis.

These presentations and more will be part of the University of Maine at Farmington’s “Symposium Day, 2003,” an annual event in which the university cancels classes and replaces them with an entire day set aside to recognize the scholarly and creative works by UMF students and faculty. This year’s Symposium Day will be held Wednesday, April 16, beginning at 9 a.m. at various locations across campus. The public is invited.

First held in 1999, UMF Symposium Day was proposed by the University’s Faculty Senate to offer the campus and area community the opportunity to showcase the diversity of scholarly and creative works achieved at the Farmington campus. The daylong event, consisting of student and faculty research findings, presentations, readings, performances and art displays has expanded to include more presentations and more participants.

Presentations run the academic and creative gamut in different venues. Senior art students will display their works in the UMF Art Gallery. There will be presentations varying from “Hydrogen: The Energy Source of the Future,” to “Perspectives on War and Human Life in the Iliad” in the North Dining Hall. A photo exhibit and English readings will go on all day in Room C-123 in UMF’S Olsen Student Center. Other events and presentations will go on at UMF’s Alumni Theater, Nordica Auditorium, Ricker Hall, Ricker Addition and the Roberts Learning Center.
