LIVERMORE – A family of five escaped injury Monday afternoon after a fire started on an outside wall of a Hathaway Hill Road home.

The wall, at one end of the building, was burned on both the first and second floors.

Firefighters were called back to the scene later Monday evening for a working structure fire when the blaze apparently reignited. About 20 firefighters from three towns responded to fight the initial fire Monday afternoon, which started after a brush fire thought to be extinguished spread into an outside end-wall.

The building is the second oldest house in Livermore, Fire Chief Randy Berry said.

Clayton Tibbetts, his companion and three small children were living at the house owned by his brother, Darrell Tibbetts, Berry said.

Tibbetts had an all-day burn permit for the brush fire, Berry said.

“They had burned an area over and thought everything was OK,” he said.

Then someone mentioned that a wood stove was on, Berry said, but Tibbetts said he didn’t have a wood stove.

Both Tibbetts’ brothers were at the scene putting water on the fire when firefighters arrived, Berry said.

Flames were showing and the house was full of smoke, he said.

Clayton and his family were already looking for a place to live temporarily, Berry said Monday afternoon before firefighters were called back.

He said it is believed the house was insured.

About 5:45 p.m., Wilton firefighters joined Livermore, Livermore Falls and Jay responders to fight the structure fire that had rekindled.
