BOSTON (AP) – David Ortiz hit a tying, two-run single and Jeremy Giambi’s RBI double put Boston ahead as the Red Sox rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-4 Wednesday night.

Manny Ramirez and Nomar Garciaparra homered for Boston, which won its third straight. The Red Sox also scored in their final at-bat Tuesday night to beat Tampa Bay, winning on Shea Hillenbrand’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Rey Ordonez hit a two-run homer and Rocco Baldelli’s seventh-inning RBI single extended his hitting streak to a club rookie-record 13 games for the Devil Rays.

With the Red Sox trailing 4-2 in eighth, Todd Walker drew a leadoff walk from Travis Harper. One out later, Ramirez singled off Lance Carter (3-1) and moved to second when left fielder Carl Crawford made an ill-advised throw to third.

Ortiz followed with a single up the middle to tie it.

Giambi drove in Hillenbrand, who walked, with a double off the center-field wall and scored on Trot Nixon’s single to make it 6-4.

Chad Fox (1-2) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the win. Brandon Lyon worked the ninth for his first career save.

After retiring the first two batters easily in the first, Boston starter John Burkett had Aubrey Huff 0-2 before issuing a walk. Ben Grieve singled and Al Martin’s RBI single made it 1-0.

Ordonez homered off the light tower above the left-field wall after Damion Easley singled leading off the second to make it 3-0.

Ordonez saved at least one run in the second when he went into the hole at shortstop to get Johnny Damon’s grounder and fired to first, ending the inning with the bases loaded.

Ramirez homered into the new seats above the Green Monster, the first ball to land up there since they were built during the offseason, to cut it to 3-1 in third.

Garciaparra’s homer in the fifth, his fourth of the season, made it 3-2.

Shiell called up after Howry optioned to Pawtucket

For a while, Jason Shiell thought his promotion was a prank.

After the Boston bullpen’s latest collapse Tuesday night against Tampa Bay, the Red Sox purchased Shiell’s contract from Triple-A Pawtucket. He arrived in Boston in time for Wednesday night’s game against the Devil Rays.

The Red Sox optioned right-hander Bob Howry to Pawtucket late Tuesday night.

Shiell, 26, was out to dinner with his teammates in Ottawa, where the PawSox were playing. When he got the call, he thought one of his teammates was pulling his leg. He was shocked the callup came so early in the season.

“I was pretty surprised,” Shiell said.

“I was at a steak house … someone got on the intercom and said you have to call (Pawtucket manager) Buddy Bailey. I thought they might have been kidding.”

They weren’t, and Shiell got another shot at the majors.

Howry gave up 11 hits and six runs in four games for a 12.46 ERA. Ramiro Mendoza, who blew a 5-1 lead Tuesday before Shea Hillenbrand’s game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth, has a 16.71 ERA after seven appearances.
