LEWISTON – Mike Kinsman hurled a complete game five-hitter and struck out seven as Bates rallied in the bottom of the seventh to secure the opener, 3-2, before dropping the nightcap to Bowdoin, 7-0, in baseball action Saturday.

The Bobcats (5-10) scored on an error and a single by Nate Maxwell through a drawn-in infield in the seventh inning to take Game 1. In the nightcap, the Mules (7-11-1) scored an unearned run in the top of the first, which was all pitcher Owen Kenney would need to toss a complete game win.

Husson downs Lyndon

BANGOR – Justin Spencer stroked an RBI single in the sixth inning of Game 1 and Josh Ferguson sprayed four hits over two games to power Husson past Lyndon State, 4-3 and 8-3.

Tony Laprino and Spencer hit RBI singles in the sixth to provide the one run edge the Braves (16-11)needed to earn the win in Game 1..

Lyndon State (7-6) jumped out to a 3-run lead in the first inning of Game 2. However, the Braves posted two in the home half of the first and tallied runs nearly every inning thereafter to deprive Lyndon State the rest of the way.

USM sweeps Plymouth

GORHAM – Senior Andy Lang had four hits, including his first two home runs of the season, to power the University of Southern Maine to a sweep of Plymouth State College, 4-2 and 14-4.

In the opening game, the Panthers (9-13) took a 1-0 lead when Scott Hodsdon’s sacrifice fly drove in sohpomore Derek Guimond. However, the lead was short-lived as the Huskies (16-10) plated three runs in the bottom of the first.

USM rallied in the second game as Lang homered and Colin Loveless tied the game on a two-run single. The Huskies took the lead for good with a pair of unearned runs in the thrid inning.

UMass Dartmouth 7

GORHAM – Sophomore Emily Kirkland scored a sudden death overtime goal to give the University of Southern Maine an 8-7 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Kirkland led all scorers with four goals. Senior goalie Andrea Guerette was credited with 12 saves for the Huskies (4-7).

Colby 19, Conn. College 13

WATERVILLE – Senior attacker Ally King reached 200 points with three goals and four assists to pace Colby to a 19-13 win over Connecticut College.

Cara Dionisi , who was Mules (9-3) leading goal scorer this year, added five goals and two assists. Katie Wheeler added four goals, while Katie Trainor and Laruen Gremelspacher each had two goals.

Amherst 16, Bowdoin 11

AMHERST, Mass. – Allison Aldrich paced Amherst to a 16-11 win over Bowdoin with four goals.

The Jeffs (10-1) jumped out to an 8-3 lead when the Polar Bears (7-5) rallied and cut the deficit to 10-8 but couldn’t get over the hump.

Keene St 17, USM, 4

GORHAM – Senior midfielder Chad Tiger netted five goals and added an assist to lead Keene State to a 17-4 rout over the University of Southern Maine.

Keene State (8-2) piled on the goals in the second half, notching four in the third and six in the final frame. Sophomore Sean Favreau scored the Huskies’ (2-6) lone goal of the second half.

Tufts 10, Bates 9

MEDFORD – Sophomore Devin Clarke fired a shot off the post and into the net with just 36 seconds remaining to lift Tufts University to a 10-9 win over Bates College .

The Bobcats (5-9) were led by Brad Frost with four goals, while senior Mark Dobbyn mad 10 saves in net.

Softball

USM splits with

Eastern Conn.

MANSFIELD – Sophomore Natasha Jackson of Augusta produced the winning run with a sacrifice fly as Southern Maine defeated Eastern Connecticut State University 6-5 in the opener, before dropping the nightcap 1-0 .

In the opening game, the Huskies (21-9) trailed 1-0 before exploding for five runs in the third inning. Junior Darci Holland of Buckfield stroked a two-run double for the third and fourth run of the set. The Warriors (16-11) tried to rally in the bottom half of the fifth inning but came up one short.

Warrior sophomore Lori Brelsford scored the lone run of Game 2 on an infield error. Freshman pitcher Katie Mainville was the hard luck loser for the Huskies despite a superb outing, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out four.

Bowdoin and Tufts split

BRUNSWICK – Danielle Chagnon homered and Rachael Gordon smashed an RBI double to lift Bowdoin to a 2-1 win over Tufts University in the opener, while dropping the nightcap 11-5.

Erin Hanley struck out eight while scattering 10 hits to pick up the win in Game 1 for the Polar Bears (8-14).

Megan Rogers went 4-for-4 and knocked in two runs for the Polar Bears in the nightcap loss. Katie Smith and Julie Fox had three hits apiece for Tufts (17-10), including a pair of home runs for Fox.

St. Joseph’s takes two

from Colby

WATERVILLE – Sarah Ouellette of Jay sprung an RBI single in extra innings of Game 1 to lift St. Joseph’s to a 4-3 win, before the Monks cruised to a 5-2 victory in the second game .

The Monks (10-8) scored three unearned runs in the first inning of the opener. The Mules (7-10) tallied two runs back in the bottom of the first and tied the contest at three in the seventh inning.

Kristen Gaudette, who improved her pitching record to 3-3 in the opener, powered a two-run double in the first inning of the nightcap to get things started.

Bates sweeps Trinity

LEWISTON – Krissie Whiting drove in three runs in the first game and Carla Flaherty drove in three in the second game as Bates swept Trinity, 4-3 and 8-0.

Whiting singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1, her second hit of the game. Ginger Walsh picked up the victory for the Bobcats (5-11).
