1922 – 2003

NEWRY- The town of Newry and surrounding areas lost a valued member of the community of 81 years on April 13.

Warren Powers, son of Harry and Cora Burgess Powers, passed away in the Veterans Home at South Paris.

The family goes back several generations in the Bear River section of Newry.

Born February 21, 1922, he was raised on the family farm during his youth, attended schools in the local area and worked in the Rumford paper mill.

For 33 years, he was employed by the Maine State Highway Department, retiring as foreman. For several years thereafter, he worked for Western Maine Supply Co. doing excavation work.

During World War II, he was in the Army Air Corp stationed in Hayes, Kansas, where he met and married Ida May Larmore who predeceased him in September of 1984.

Warren firmly believed in doing the very best for whatever project he was involved in, be it constable, Newry Fire Dept., American Legion, Windy Valley Snowmobile Club, or being a neighbor always ready to lend a helping hand and help with reconstructing historical data.

He enjoyed gardening, tinkering and the woods and wildlife.

He is survived by two daughters, Ileen Roberts and her husband Edward of Leesburg, Va., and Susan Leeson and her husband Dean of Binghamton, N.Y.; two sons, Stephen and his wife Sandra of Norway, and Timothy of Newry; four grandchildren, Sandra Penn, Cheryl Clemons, Miranda and Stephen Powers; and five great-grandchildren, Wilson and Makenzie Clemons, and Dixie, Stormy and Jana Penn.

He is also survived by one brother, Mervin, of Florida.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Rexford and Bernard.
