PERU – The town spring will be shut down for regular maintenance during the last week of April.

Selectman Jim Pulsifer announced that the shutdown will take place from 7 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, to 9 a.m. Thursday, May 1. The announcement was made during Monday’s meeting of the Board of Selectmen.

The spring, he said, is shut down for maintenance twice a year.

Selectmen Monday received an update on changes to the Maine Resident Homestead Property Tax Exemption.

According to the information provided, the exemption for qualifying property with an assessment of less than $125,000 will remain at $7,000. Exemptions for qualifying properties assessed at between $125,000 and $249,999 will fall to $5,000; those assessed at $250,000 and up will drop to $2,500.

This is effective this year and will be reflected on 2003 taxes. Property owners must apply to the Town Office for the exemption.

Selectmen discussed use of the elevator at the Grange hall, and decided to post instructions on its use outside the elevator.

There is a Princess Ann antique wood stove in the Grange that will be put out to bid immediately. Any interested parties may contact the town office for instructions on bidding. Bids will start at $250.

Road Commissioner David Gammon said the roads are drying rapidly and he hopes to take the posted signs off by May 1.

In the absence of Chairman Norman De Roche, Vice Chairman Andy St. Pierre moved to write a letter to state representatives stating that selectmen did not favor a bill that states when property is sold for back taxes any leftover monies after taxes are paid would be given to the previous owners. All selectmen were in agreement.

Town Clerk Vera Parent said that she hopes to have the school budget referendum on June 10, which is also a state election day.

Building permits were signed for Brian Knox, Wayne McKay, Peter Heath, Eric Kerr and David Porter.

A Tree Growth renewal was signed for Joseph Sanchas.

Peru still needs an animal control officer.

The Town Office wants to beautify the area, and anyone with extra perennials or annuals may contact the Town Office.
