When a person is called to military service and answers the same call that created this great nation, some never make it back. Some young and healthy Maine kids return home from this call to arms physically and mentally broken, classified as “totally and permanently disabled.” All gave some, some gave all.
Common sense and common decency would suggest that these surviving veterans had earned the right to live in peace without the added intrusive and burdensome property taxation in the great state of Maine.
Not so.
Repeated requests for property tax exemption for this class of disabled veterans go unanswered and/or ignored.
It appears the laptop computers, tax deals to large corporations and government perks take priority over the veterans who have earned the right to live in this country without further dues being paid.
What price does Maine put on the freedoms these veterans protected?
Politically correct phrases and words flow forth from the government, but action, appreciation and common decency do not.
So, short of dying for our freedoms, what price do these veterans pay to live in Maine, unencumbered by ill-spent taxes?
Remember, this is a government “of the people” and the Maine people I know wouldn’t stand for this injustice, let alone have it represent how real Mainers treat their veterans.
