The Sun Journal’s editorial attacking Auburn legislator Tom Shields for his response to a letter written by a local high school student was nothing short of a deplorable assault upon a dedicated public servant.
On April 21, the Sun Journal, perpetually motivated to disseminate its extremist left-wing ideology, accused Dr. Shields of “acting poorly in his official capacity as state legislator.” In reality, Dr. Shields was merely stating his well-educated and professional opinion regarding physician assisted suicide – which is exactly what the student requested him to do.
Having read Dr. Shield’s letter, I found it to be informative, educated, persuasive and compassionate. I was amazed at the time and effort that Dr. Shields made to clearly articulate the reasoning behind his opposition to physician-assisted suicide. The Sun Journal should applaud Dr. Shields for his candid assessment of such a difficult issue issue, rather than maliciously attacking him.
I’ve known Dr. Shields since I was a junior in high school. He’s always been helpful and respectful.
As a college student, I appreciate leaders like Dr. Shields who are willing to stand by their principles and speak the facts instead of pandering to our hypersensitive and morally corrupt culture.
The citizens of District 72 are fortunate to be represented by such an honorable and principled man. Good public servants like Dr. Shields are hard to find and the Sun Journal should be ashamed of itself.
