1932 – 2003

LEWISTON – Richard W. Small Sr., 70, a resident of Stone Road, Auburn (P.O. Box # 834 Auburn, Maine 04212) died Friday afternoon, April 25, 2003 at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 28, 1932, the son of Harry C. and Clara G. Huntley Small. Educated in Auburn schools, he was a graduate of Edward Little High School with the class of 1951.

He served in the U. S. Naval Reserves. He married Mildred Adamsky who passed away several years ago. He later married the former Martha Banister in 1983.

In his earlier years, he had been employed by H. P. Hood & Sons. Since 1976, he owned and operated Roak the Florist and Greenhouses on Center Street in Auburn.

He attended High Street Congregational Church for many years. He served the City of Auburn on the Planning Board, and as City Councilman for Ward 1 from 1991-1998.

He was a member of Tranquil Lodge # 29 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons in Auburn, a member of Lewiston Lodge of Perfection, Auburn Council Princes of Jerusalem, H. H. Dickey Chapter Rose Croix, Maine Consistory Valley of Portland 32nd Degree, Kora Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S. and a long-time member of the Kora Arab Patrol Drill Unit.

He was also a member of Bradford Chapter # 09 Royal Arch Masons, and a long-time member of the Auburn-Lewiston Kiwanis Club, serving on its board of directors, and volunteering many years of his time at the annual Kiwanis pancake breakfasts. He was also a member of the Maine State Florists Association.

His hobbies and enjoyments included all of his family, hunting, fishing, woodworking, his vegetable and flower gardens, and spending time at his camp in Eustis.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Small, of Auburn; four daughters, Kathi Doyle and her husband, Bryan, of Wales, Brenda Verrill of Auburn, Elizabeth Small of Sabattus, Patricia LaVallee and her husband, Garner, of Auburn; two sons, Richard W. (Butch) Small Jr. and his wife, Regina, of Mechanic Falls, and Michael Small and his wife, Elizabeth, of Minot; 14 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Greeley of Auburn and Elizabeth Rose of Fayetteville, N.C.; and one brother, John Small of Mesa, Ariz.
