RUMFORD – Job counselors at the CareerCenter hope people looking for a new job or information on training programs will take advantage of its first-ever job fair set for Tuesday.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Hall. Representatives from nearly 20 area businesses will be available to talk with prospective employees and take applications if jobs are currently open, or to take names if job openings are expected in the future.

CareerCenter counselor Darla Sanford said businesses that will be represented offer jobs in such fields as retail, medical work, child care, manufacturing, construction and other areas. Dexter Supply, a building materials company that is currently constructing a new store in Mexico, will be taking applications. A temp service from Lewiston will also be on hand. Most potential employers are from the Rumford or Bethel areas.

“We want to give employees a chance to fill out applications and let them know of the types of jobs that might be available,” said Sanford.

CareerCenter counselors will also be available to explain the training programs provided in the area, including the one offered by Rumford’s new River Valley Technology Center. Representatives from the Region 9 School of Applied Technology in Mexico will also outline educational opportunities.

CareerCenters in East Wilton and Norway have held job fairs in the past, and will hold others next month. Sanford said the Rumford center decided April would be a good time to assist the employees because of the traditional seasonal layoffs in the area and because the peak hiring season comes in the summer months.
