STANDISH – St. Joseph’s College swept Becker College in a doubleheader at Larry Mahaney Diamond Sunday afternoon.

In Game 1, with the score tied 3-3, Freshman Ben Muniz led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to left center field, and Andy Exley drove in an insurance run to give the Monks a 5-3 win.

Alan Batcheldor (2-3) gained the win in relief, holding the Hawks to no runs in the only inning he worked,

Game 2 saw an offensive explosion from the Monks cleanup hitter Jesse LaCasse who blasted a grand slam and a two-run homer as St. Joe’s cruised to the 13-6 victory.

Bill Chapman (1-1) earned the win with former St. Dom’s standout Ryan O’Hara closing out the game with three strikeouts.

Bates and Bowdoin split

BRUNSWICK – Bates College split a doubleheader with Bowdoin College Sunday afternoon, with the Polar Bears taking Game1 6-3 and the Bobcats salvaging the nightcap with a 4-3 victory.

Game 1 saw Mac Bulger scatter four hits and strike out five to notch the win before giving way to Travis Dube in the sixth inning. He picked up his third save of the season.

The Polar Bears were paced by Jimmy Shea who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Kevin Bougie and John Clifford each hit a solo home run in the win.

Game 2 saw Bates bounce back with a 4-3 win as Jon Furbush gained his second win of the season by pitching a complete game .

Charlie Engasser blasted a double in the win.

Huskies split with RIC

GORHAM – Marc Cahill scattered four hits and one walk while striking out 10 in a complete game effort, and Adam Lemieux belted three safeties and five RBI as the University of Southern Maine defeated Rhode Island College 8-2 in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader.

The Anchormen came back in Game 2 with a 7-1 victory behind a five-hit, complete game from Matt Brannon to salvage a split.

ORONO – The University of Maine handed Binghamton a pair of losses in America East Conference baseball as the Black Bears walked off with 8-0 and 13-9 wins Sunday afternoon.

Game 1 saw Gregg Norton toss a complete game shutout, striking out eight while allowing four hits.

Alain Picard and Gregg Creek carried the big sticks with Picard belting out three hits and driving in a pair of runs, while Creek chipped in with a pair of singles and three RBI in the victory.

Game 2 had the Black Bears notching their 26th win of the season with a 13-9 victory as Creek raised his record to 5-0 on the season.

Men’s lacrosse

UMass Dartmouth 13, USM 0

GORHAM – Ten different players scored goals for the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth as the Corsairs soared away with a 13-0 shutout of the University of Southern Maine in men’s Little East Conference lacrosse action Sunday.

Freshman Jack Mackie tallied the only goal the Corsairs would need in the final minute of the first period to go up 1-0.

Mackie, Adam Cusano, and Mike Ruscio each scored a pair of goals in the lopsided victory. Mike Jenkins made eight saves to record his first collegiate shutout.

Women’s lacrosse

Colby 11, Bowdoin 7

WATERVILLE – Colby College handed Bowdoin College an 11-7 setback in a New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game Sunday at Crafts Field.

The White Mules broke the game open in the first 15 minutes of the second half, scoring six goals to take a commanding 9-4 lead and never looked back in the win. Amanda Epstein scored four goals and added an assist to pace the attack.

Senior Ally King tallied a pair of goals and added four assists as she became Colby’s all-time leading scorer in women’s lacrosse.

The Polar Bears were paced by Hilary Abrams who scored a hat trick in the loss.

Colby keeper Anna Schrerr made 14 saves to register the win.

Softball

Colby sweeps Trinity

WATERVILLE – The Colby College softball team clinched a spot in the upcoming New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Trinity College Sunday.

The Mules moved into a first-place tie with Tufts in the NESCAC East after registering 3-1 and 8-0 victories over Trinity.

Annette Caswell drove in all three runs in the first game with a double in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the third to account for the Mules score.

Lauren Olmsted notched the win with a complete game shutout.

Game 2 was called on the eight-run rule after five innings.

Wendy Bonner went 2-for-2, while Caswell scored a pair of runs and also had a pair of hits in the victory.

Toni-Lynn Rollins allowed just two hits in five innings to earn the victory.

Maine sweeps Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Jess Brady went 4-for-7, scored three runs and drove in two runs, including the game-winning run, as the University of Maine beat the University of Vermont 2-1 and 8-3 in an America East softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

Jenna Merchant notched the complete game victory for the Black Bears.

In Game 2, Maine scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to break the game open, posting an 8-3 win for the sweep.

Sarah Bennis struck out six batters to post the win for Maine.

USM splits with Keene

GORHAM – Ang Cote scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the University of Southern Maine to a 2-1 win over Keene State in Game 1 of a Little East Conference doubleheader Sunday at Towers Field.

But Game 2 saw Shauna Mullen blast a walk-off home run in the nightcap to lift Keene State to a split as the Huskies fell 8-7.

USM’s Kristen Tong drove a sacrifice fly to drive in Cote in the bottom of the 10th to account for the Huskies ‘win.

Melissa Henderson picked up her ninth win of the season, throwing a complete game.

Bates splits with Brandeis

LEWISTON – Bates College and Brandeis University split a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Lafayette Field. The Judges took the opener 6-2, while the Bobcats won the second game, 6-3.

Brandeis used the long ball to produce the Gam3e 1 victory as it belted out three home runs.

Sara Albert rocketed a three-run homer in the first inning for the early lead and added another shot in the third inning. Felicity Hanks accounted for the third homer with a blast in the sixth inning.

Game 2 saw the Bobcats respond with a win as they put the game away in the third inning, scoring two runs for a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish.

Sarah Klenakis tossed seven strong innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs for the win.
