FARMINGTON – Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from regional middle schools are set to compete in the annual Sandy Andy Valley Middle School Science and Invention Fair being held Thursday afternoon and evening, May 1, from 2 to 7:30 p.m. in the North Dining Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington

The students present their project findings or their inventions at their own district science fairs. Then the top five projects in each of the grades proceed to the fair held at UMF. Public viewing will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6:30 to approximately 7:30 p.m. in the the UMF North Dining Hall. The exhibition will be closed to the public between 4 and 6:30p.m. for judging.

The Sandy Andy Middle School League includes Buckfield Middle School, Dirigo Middle School, Jay Middle School, Livermore Falls Middle School, Mount Blue Middle School, Mountain Valley Middle School, Peru Elementary, and Telstar Middle School.

Bible conference

MEXICO – The Mexico First Baptist Church at 20 Roxbury Road will hold its annual Spring Bible Conference from Sunday, May 4, to Tuesday, May 6.

The featured speaker will be Rev. David Miles of New York City, and his topic is “Revitalizing The Local Church.” Miles will speak in the Sunday service at 10:45 a.m., which will also include special music. A luncheon will be provided by the church at noon. Miles will also speak at 6 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday, with special music by the Fishers of Men quartet, a local singing group.

Miles works for Church Resource Ministries, an organization committed to working with leaders to strengthen and start churches around the world. His expertise is in church revitalization, and he specializes in working with churches in transition or in need of intervention. He has a doctoral degree in ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. He lives in Queens, New York City, with his wife, Janet, and their three teenage daughters.

Isabella meeting

RUMFORD – St. Timothy Circle 504 Daughters of Isabella members will celebrate the circle’s 73rd anniversary at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Teena’s Restaurant. Three members will receive 25-year pins: Leola LeCours, Janette Blouin and Pierette Bolduc. Seven will receive 50-year pins: Mary Beachesne, Constance Belanger, Gemma Bishop, Patricia Gautreau, Alfreda Kaubris, Barbara Milligan and Gladys Gilbert. The committee includes Chairman Pat Hopkins, Millie Harlow, Lillian Irish, Margaret McInnis, Myrtle McKenna, Charlene Johnson, Marcelle Miller and Anita Zitoli.

RUMFORD – The American Legion Auxiliary of Napoleon Ouellette Unit 24 will be held Sunday, May 4. Installation of officers will take place at 6:30 p.m. followed by the meeting.

MEXICO – Beginning the week of May 6 and continuing throughout the summer the hours for the Mexico Free Public Library will be the following:

Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Book fair

PERU – A Scholastic Book Fair will be held during Family Night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Peru Elementary School. Classroom visits will be held Wednesday, May 7, through Friday, May 9.

RUMFORD – The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Post.

Support group

RUMFORD – The Brain Injury Support Group will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, at the Rumford Community Hospital, in the conference room on the second floor. A guest speaker from Maine Handicapped Skiing will speak regarding activities offered for handicapped individuals during the summer months. RUMFORD – The Mountain Valley High School music department will present its annual Spring Concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, in the auditorium. The concert will feature the band, chorus and select vocal group.
