NEW GLOUCESTER – Spring brings several events sponsored by the New Gloucester Historical Society.
The society will hold its annual clean-up day on Saturday, May 10, at the Universalist Meeting House, Intervale Road. Work will begin at 9 a.m. and last until the job is done, usually about two hours. Bring cleaning supplies.
The society will hold the dedication of the New Gloucester blockhouse site on Gloucester Hill Road near the Lower Village Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17.
The event will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the construction of the blockhouse in 1753. During the past year, a committee has raised funds to improve the site and install a sign, a bronze plaque and benches adjacent to the replica of the blockhouse. Everyone is invited.
Members will assist a fifth-grade group from Freeport on Friday, May 23. The youngsters will visit Opportunity Farm, then under the supervision of teachers and society members, they will have a picnic lunch at the blockhouse site, weather permitting.
The society asks volunteers to join the group at 11:30 a.m. for an hour or so to talk about the history of the town and show some historic grave stones in the Lower Village Cemetery. If interested in helping call Betty True at 926-4469.
