1911 – 2003

FARMINGTON – Jaro A. Konecny, 92, of Salem, died Wednesday morning, April 30, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 16, 1911, in Gracanica, Bosnia, Yugolslavia, he was a son of the late Alois and Frida (Taborsky) Konecny.

He was a former Yugoslavian naval officer in the Intelligence Service and a Maritime officer and master.

On July 4, 1936 he married the former Barbara Kakujan. Their family came to the United States in 1950 and together they owned and operated Longfellow’s Restaurant in Kingfield.

In 1950 he became a registered Maine guide. He taught the hunter safety course until the fall of 2002.

He was an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America and helped organize the Handicapped Scout Program and served as its leader for over 20 years. He was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.

He became a public accountant in 1966 and still enjoyed doing tax returns for his friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Maine Association of Professional Accountants, the National Society of Public Accountants and served as treasurer of the Mt. Abram Cemetery Association in Salem Township. He served as justice of the peace, poll tax collector and volunteered for S.C.O.R.E. sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration and as a translator.

Survivors include a nephew, Jan Busta and a niece, Marie Gottwaldova, both of the Czech Republic.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife, a son, Boris Adolf and a sister.
