AUBURN – The Child Health Center will sponsor the following car-seat safety inspection clinics this month: Monday, May 12, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Auburn Police Department; Wednesday, May 14, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Bessey Motors in South Paris; and Thursday, May 22, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Rumford Fire Department. The fitting stations are free and open to the public.

Children’s car seats and booster seats are checked for proper installation, including safety recalls. Free booster seats are also available for eligible families.

Appointments are required and can be made by calling the Child Health Center, 782-5437. The nonprofit center has offices in Norway, Auburn and Rumford. For more information, visit www.childhealthcenter.org.

Peace workshop

AUGUSTA – “Recruiting for Peace,” a workshop on alternatives to military service, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Mediation and Facilitation Resources, 11 King St.

Organized by the American Friends Service Committee of Maine, it will feature speaker Kevin Ramirez of the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors and sessions on how to talk with young people about non-military career options.

Freedom Festival

FREEPORT – A Freeport Freedom Festival will be held on Sept. 13 and 14. The event is being backed by the town, which will be decorated in red, white and blue.

There will be an Uncle Sam’s Flea Market, a Lady Liberty Craft Show, a Young American Artists Show and a Victory Garden Farmer’s Market.

Events will include a patriotic quilt contest, an apple pie contest, a patriotic photography contest and a candlelight patriotic singalong. The Red Cross will hold a blood drive and the veterans’ organizations will conduct fund-raising events.

Walk for mind

PORTLAND – Residents of Maine will join with thousands across the country on Saturday, May 10, in a Campaign for the Mind of America. Gathering at 10 a.m. at Deering Oaks Park, participants in NAMIWALKS will kick-off the “friend-raising and fund-raising,” according to Carol Carothers, executive director for the Maine Chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
