OXFORD – Their cars were totaled and broken lights and car parts littered the road, but two motorists escaped a crash Wednesday on Route 26 without major injuries.
Oxford police Sgt. Rickie Jack said David N. Simon, 45, of Oxford had his signal light blinking and his 1988 Ford hatchback stopped northbound as he waited to turn into the NAPA Auto Parts store.
Diane Colby, 49, Oxford, was also heading north and Jack said she apparently didn’t see Simon and slammed her 1991 Ford Taurus into him.
The impact pushed Simon into the southbound lane.
Jack said a woman driving south swerved to the right, narrowly avoiding Simon. Her name was unavailable.
He said Colby and Simon were wearing seat belts. Both treated at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway and released.
Oxford Fire Department Lt. Steve Cordwell said firefighters put down a layer of Class B foam to prevent any gasoline vapors from rising and then spent about five minutes cutting Simon from his vehicle. He said the cutting tools don’t necessarily make a lot of sparks, but it’s safer to use the foam.
Simon complained of back pain so EMTs wanted to make sure he was not unnecessarily twisted or turned when being taken from his vehicle. Rescue workers slid a long backboard into the car and got Simon onto it before getting him out.
