INDUSTRY – A work day will be held Sunday to start work on converting the former West Mills Fire Station to a food pantry. The emergency food bank will be used to help people in Chesterville, Industry and New Sharon.
The building has to be up and running and inspected by June 1 to be considered a food bank eligible to get federal funds.
Members of Clearwater Ministries are looking for volunteer labor and equipment and donations of money, building materials, gravel and so forth to help them fix the old “fire barn” up to be inspected June 1 and approved as suitable for a food pantry.
Lewis Glidden, president of the ministry, said he ordered rolled roofing to put on the roof to stop the leaks. The group is hoping in the future to put on a new metal roof but for now, they have enough funds to cover rolled roofing.
Clearwater is going to lease the former station from the town of Industry, Glidden said.
Volunteers are needed to help at 11 a.m. Sunday at the station on West Mills Road, also known as Route 148, located next door to the West Mills Community Church.
A group of young people are coming to help clean the grounds, Glidden said.
Rosemary Frazier, another Industry resident, is collecting items to be sold at a flea market to raise money for the building. The flea market will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at the Industry Town Hall during the town’s bicentennial celebration. To drop off items, call Frazier at 778-4639 or Sayward Hackett at 778-3123.
She is also selling raffle tickets with numerous prizes to support the pantry. Prices range from a cord of firewood to a gallon of maple syrup and gift certificates to many places. There will also be a 50/50 raffle to support the building fund with the drawing July 6.
