POLAND – When you’re hot, you’re hot.

Yarmouth pounded out 12 hits, including seven for extra bases as the Clippers routed Poland, 11-1, in Western Maine Conference baseball action Friday.

The game was shortened to six innings.

“The boys hit the ball well,” said Yarmouth (5-4) coach Peter Blake. “We struggled early in the season hitting the ball and losing one-run games, but things have turned around.”

That is an understatement. In the past week, the Clippers have won big three times – Two by the 10-run rule, and another an 8-0 whitewash.

“I think we have hit seven or eight home runs in that stretch,” said Blake.

This game wasn’t much different as the visitors went long twice on Poland (3-6) starter Eric Piper.

While it wasn’t until the middle innings that the outcome was obvious, Yarmouth knocked on the door from the very start. Justin Morrill opened the game by sending the second pitch to left for a double, but Piper settled down and left him out there.

Yarmouth scored a pair each in the second and third. An error and a sacrifice fly produced the first two. A homer to left by Bill Gildart powered the other.

Yarmouth pitcher Jon Aceto cruised through the first three innings. Poland mounted its only real threat in the fifth when the Knights pushed across their only run. Nate Spencer scored when Alex Smith was issued a bases-loaded walk. Poland left the bases loaded without the benefit of a hit in the inning.

“I just told him to calm down and try to stay head of the hitters,” said Blake. “He did and he did a nice job.”

Yarmouth closed out the day with a six-run sixth inning. Aaron Lowell powered the attack with a two-run shot to left.

“You can tell they are a good hitting team,” said Poland coach Charles Green. “They had some good swings up there and “Pipe” (Eric Piper) got a few pitches over the middle of the plate.”

Gildart’s blast came on an 0-2 count.

“We just couldn’t get anything going,” said Green. “That’s been our problem the last couple of games. We just haven’t been able to get the key hits.”

Morrill had two doubles for Yarmouth. Lowell drove in a total of three runs.

Aceto earned the win, allowing just three hits and fanning five.

“It’s always tough to win here,” said Blake. “Seems like we always go home losing 4-3. It’s nice leaving here with a victory.”
