1906 – 2003

PORTLAND – Margaret B. Hourigan, 97, formerly of Rochester, N.H., died Monday, May 12, at a local nursing care facility.

Born Jan. 21, 1906, in Oswego, N.Y., the daughter of Charles W. and M. Elizabeth (Cox) Barnes, she attended schools in Oswego. She then attended Barnard College in New York and graduated in 1928.

On Nov. 4, 1935, she married John Joseph Hourigan. Following his death in 1963, she returned to college and received her master’s degree in library science from the University of New Hampshire.

She then went to work for Farmington High School as a librarian in Farmington, N.H., for 10 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rochester, N.H., and also of the Hospital Auxiliary at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital.

She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, traveling and rug hooking.

Survivors include two sons, John David Hourigan and his wife, Beth of St. Johnsbury, Vt. , and John Joseph Hourigan of Providence, R.I.; a daughter, Margaret Hourigan and her husband, Nicholas Noyes of Mechanic Falls; a sister, Mabel Knauff of Niantic, Conn.; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John; and her daughter, Betsy Hennessey.
