MEXICO – In addition to learning about bike and scooter safety, 150 youngsters attending this weekend’s Mountain Valley Wheels Rodeo will get free helmets.

Rain or shine, from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, May 17, at Mountain Valley Middle School’s back parking lot, participants will be required to navigate through a safety course, said co-organizer Douglas Maifeld.

Maifeld, a Rumford patrolman, and Mexico Police Chief James Theriault, are slated to give a safety talk and register bicycles so they can be identified if stolen or lost.

Free bicycle inspections at Saturday’s rodeo will be conducted by Jackie Gammon of Wallace’s Wheels in Rumford. Participants who complete the entire safety course will also be automatically entered into a raffle for two bikes, Maifeld said. The drawing will take place at a later date.

The SAD 43 Wellness Committee, comprised of Maifeld, Theriault, Gammon, Kathy Sutton, John Wallace, Jessica Hunter and Lisa Drapeau, is hosting the bike safety rodeo, using money from the Healthy Maine Funding Grant and Tobacco Grant funds.

Representatives from Mexico and Rumford fire departments as well as Med-Care Ambulance of Mexico will also be on site.
