NEW YORK (AP) -Vanessa Marcil of “General Hospital” and Benjamin Hendrickson of “As the World Turns” both won their first Daytime Emmy awards for supporting acting roles on Friday.

Marcil stripped off her shoes and complained she was too nervous to talk, before thanking several people.

“God bless the world!” she shouted.

The balding Hendrickson said he always believed his award went to the actor with the best hair.

“To my mom, who scrimped and saved to send me to Julliard to study the classics, I’m sorry,” he joked. “But I know you’re happy about this.”

The Daytime Emmys, held at Radio City Music Hall, expanded to three hours for the first time on its 30th anniversary. Talk show host Wayne Brady, who opened with an elaborate rap number, was the host.

Dr. Phil McGraw, who moved out from under Oprah Winfrey’s shadow with his blunt tough love, was up for his first best talk show Emmy.

His show was a ratings sensation in its rookie year.

He didn’t compete against his mentor; frequent winner Winfrey stopped submitting her show for Emmys after 1998. “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” won for the past five years, and O’Donnell was best talk show host for six years, before she retired the show last year.

ABC’s “Port Charles” and its vampires competed for best drama series with more venerable shows, “As the World Turns,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless.”

Susan Flannery of “The Bold and the Beautiful” sought her third win in four years as best soap opera actress.

Anthony Geary, a three-time best actor winner for “General Hospital,” competed against five other actors seeking their first trophies.

The Emmys are given out by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
