I am writing in response to the controversy over the fireplace on the property that the city of Auburn owns (May 12).
Being a taxpaying citizen of Auburn, I too would be concerned with the liability toward the city if someone was burned at one of these weekly outings.
The city has stated that it “signed off” on the approval of this fireplace. Does this mean it is accepting responsibility for any injuries incurred at this site?
This site is a road right of way. Will other Auburn residents be allowed to put fireplaces on public rights of way?
Also, I am familiar, firsthand, with Mr. Vic Herschaft’s concerns. What the paper did not relay to its readers is that this gathering place is within 50 yards of his front door.
I am all for being neighborly, but come on. The Sun Journal reported this is an every Saturday night party. If these residents were, in fact, the neighborly bunch, they would respect Mr. Herschaft’s wishes that this didn’t take place “every” Saturday night.
