LEWISTON – It just wasn’t meant to be.

For four years, Amy Sarrazin has played varsity tennis with two specific goals in mind. The first goal was to win state titles with the Blue Devils. Mission accomplished.

The Lewiston girls are the two-time defending state champions.

The second goal was to make the final four of the state singles championship, and this year, her senior year, looked like it might be the year.

“This was the best chance so far,” said Sarrazin’s coach Anita Murphy. “She had a good draw and had a shot at it.”

Sarrazin started the tournament as the No. 4 seed. The fifth was Tracy Nale of Waterville, against whom Sarrazin had played in last year’s Eastern Maine semifinals. That match went three sets. Seeds held, and on Saturday, the match lasted only two.

“That was last year,” said Murphy. “That was a tough match then and we both knew it would be just as tough today.”

“Last year was a different match altogether,” agreed Nale.

“This season, we played the whole thing at once (last year the match was postponed due to weather midway through), and I was able to hit the ball more consistently.”

The rest of the Blue Devils, along with Sarrazin, still have the opportunity to take a third straight state title this season.

“Her season’s not over, and neither is her career,” said Murphy of Sarrazin. “It was a bump in the road, but it’s not the end of it.”
