HUBBARDSTON, Mass. (AP) – A 26-year-old Hubbardston man was in critical condition Sunday after a man shot him in the face before killing himself, police said.

Police said the gunman showed up armed outside the home of Richard Degon around 6 a.m. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old James Tower of Petersham, allegedly went inside and shot Degon in the face following a brief altercation. He then hid in the basement.

Police got Degon, his girlfriend and his parents out of the house. They found the suspect in the basement, dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a statement by Hubbardston police.

Degon’s girlfriend, Letitia Etienne, 21, of Petersham, had dated the man and had a restraining order against him, police said.

Degon was listed in critical condition Sunday evening at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
