1921 – 2003

Lewiston – Exzelia Marie Vattes, 81, a resident of King Avenue, died late Sunday at Central Maine Medical following a long illness.

She was born at Eagle Lake on Dec. 30, 1921, the daughter of Victor and Agnes Dusteau Pelletier. She was educated in the schools of Belfast.

On March 21,1940, she married Constantine Vattes in Belfast. He died Dec. 9, 1994.

Mrs. Vattes was a homemaker for most of her life, but had been employed in area shoe shops. For a time, she also co-owned and operated, along with her husband, Bernard’s Market, a family grocery store located on Main Street in Lewiston.

She was a member of the United Baptist Church and Horizon 55 of Lewiston.

She enjoyed the interests of cooking, gardening and in previous years, spending time at her cottage on Sabattus Pond.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Constance) Brogan of Palm Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Stephen (Jo-Ann) Turner of Sidney; one son, Charles G. Vattes of Scarbourgh; four grandchildren, Jason Turner, Ryan Vattes, Christina Moore and Sandra Gessner; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Newton and Logan Moore; two sisters, Corinna Thomas of Lewiston, and Anita Plourde of Berlin, N.H.; two brothers, Patrick Pelkey of Brunswick, and Norman Pellitier of Lewiston; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
