1921 – 2003

LEWISTON – Robert J. Fernald, 81, of High Street, Auburn, died Monday morning, May 26, at Central Maine Medical Center following a short illness.

He was born in Augusta on June 20, 1921, the son of Clarence and Pauline Edwards Fernald.

He was a 1939 graduate of Augusta High School.

During World War II, he served as a merchant marine, sailing all over the world. Prior to his retirement he worked as a supervisor at the former Knapp Shoe Company for many years.

He loved working in his flower garden and enjoyed going out to eat, especially at Campus Cuisine, where he had many friends.

He was the husband of Helen Barnes Fernald who died in April of 1999.

He is survived by a son, David Fernald of Portland; a stepson, Thomas Potter of Florida; two stepdaughters, Elaine and her husband Bruce Pinette of Lewiston, and Charlene and her husband John McAuliffe of Lewiston; his fiancé with whom he made his home, Joan C. Perry of Auburn; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
