BETHEL – Selectmen will conduct a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, in the cafeteria at Crescent Park School to discuss three referendum articles and seven ordinance amendments.

The referendum articles go before voters on Tuesday, June 10, and seven additional articles concerning ordinance amendments go before voters on Wednesday, June 11.

The first referendum question requests approval to proceed with a capital improvement project consisting of the design, construction and equipping of a fire station to replace the existing facility, appropriate the funds and authrize borrowing of those funds.

The second referendum question requests approval to proceed with a capital improvement project consisting of the design, rehabilitation, construction and equipping of an ambulance station to improve the existing facilities, appropriate and authorize borrowing the funds.

The third referendum, slated to draw the most discussion, requests authorization for the Board of Selectmen to enter into an agreement with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department for the purpose of providing law enforcement services to the town of Bethel.

Should this referendum pass on June 10, Bethel would not retain its Police Department.

Oxford County Sheriff Lloyd “Skip” Herrick, however, will not be present at the hearing due to a commitment made earlier.

In his stead, Chief Deputy James Davis will be present to field questions and engage in discussions about issues surrounding the proposed law enforcement contract between the county and Bethel.
