“I think there’s something nice about graduating from your own school in your hometown,” so says James Miller, principal of Edward Little High School (May 22). That is true if the graduates’ guests can be accommodated.

Currently, each graduate is allowed six tickets for graduation. This means that a graduate with four grandparents, two parents and one sibling will not have enough tickets.

Mr. Miller stated that the gym will be equipped with a small stage and improved lighting. These two items do not replace absent family and friends.

It is too bad that the school department did not plan an outside graduation ceremony with a backup plan for an inside ceremony in case of inclement weather.

All students should be issued six maroon tickets and as many white tickets as needed. If an outdoor ceremony could be held, then all tickets, maroon and white, would be honored. If an outdoor ceremony were not possible then only the maroon tickets would be honored for an indoor ceremony.

At least with a plan such as this, all graduates have a chance of having all of their loved ones see them graduate from high school. Right now, there is no chance.

Is this plan more work?

Do the graduates deserve to have their friends and families at their graduation?

Is it the job of the school department to give the graduates the graduation that they deserve?

The answers are yes, yes, yes.
