JAY – Police are investigating the death of several hundred fish at a privately-owned fish pond on the Borroughs Road.

William Zerbst sent a sample of water to a company in Raymond to be tested after he discovered several hundred fish, including trout, suckers and minnows, dead on May 13 in the pond located in the woods, Jay police officer Eric Goodrow said.

Some dead fish were floating on the water surface, Goodrow said, but most had sunk to the bottom.

The results of the water test showed that there was not a high bacteria level, Goodrow said, and indicated that it was a chemical that had been introduced into the pond and killed the fish.

Anyone with information may contact Goodrow at 897-6766. The owner is offering a reward if someone is convicted of the crime, he said.
