RUMFORD – The spring showers departed just in time for Telstar and Mountain Valley to play their Mountain Valley Conference finale Wednesday, but that didn’t stop the Rebels from raining the hits and runs down on Hosmer Field.

Despite missing three starters due to injuries or ineligibility, Telstar pounded out 14 hits and took full advantage of six Falcon errors to score in every inning and rout Mountain Valley, 16-1. Both teams end the season 10-4.

Telstar southpaw Wade Osgood continued his undefeated season (5-0), throwing six innings of two-hit ball. Osgood struck out nine, walked one and hit two batters. The Falcons’ only run came in the sixth on an RBI single by Pat Knapp.

“Wade pitched really well. That’s all we needed and everyone else just followed him,” said second baseman Peter Poor, one of three Rebels to collect three hits on the day. He also had two RBIs.

Kinsey Durgin (two doubles) and Osgood (three runs) also rapped three hits for Telstar.

The Rebels finished the season scoring 42 runs in their last two games. They plated 26 runs against Carrabec last week.

“I didn’t think we’d played a game yet up to our ability. We showed signs of it against Carrabec and then to come here without three key players and play like this…” Telstar coach Bob Remington said. “The way things have gone during the season, we’d get those opportunities and then we’d strike out, pop up and end the inning. That happened early in this one. We had a chance to get a big inning and then would end up with one run out of it.”

Telstar scored one run in each of the first three innings, helped by three Falcon errors, but also left four runners on. They finally broke it open in the fourth with three runs on four hits and another Mountain Valley miscue.

“They hit the ball. My hat’s off to them. They played very, very well,” said Mountain Valley coach Steve LaPointe. “We had a 1-0 game last night (in a win over Hall-Dale) and we’ve had a lot of emotional games this year. But we were out of this one early.”

Osgood held the Falcons hitless until the fourth, when Craig Milledge hit a flare just to the left of and behind the first base bag and out of the reach of a diving Poor.

With the playoffs starting next week, both teams were hoping to ensure home field in the quarterfinals with a win. The Rebels will likely host one next Thursday, and may have moved ahead of MVC rivals Jay and Monmouth into the second seed in Western C with the win pending the outcomes of their games with Georges Valley and Wiscasset, respectively.

Mountain Valley was ranked sixth in the most recent Heal Point standings, but picked up some big points by beating Hall-Dale Tuesday. They could end up as high as fifth, in which case they would likely travel to conference-rival Lisbon in the quarterfinals.

“I still think we can finish fifth and have a preliminary bye,” LaPointe said. “We had an incredible season. We were 4-3 at one time and finished 10-4. I’m very pleased.”
