JAY – International Paper’s recreation site at Pine Island in Jay is open for the season. The public can visit from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Just upstream from Memorial Bridge over the Androscoggin River, Pine Island provides access to the river above and below the Jay hydroelectric dam for boat launching and fishing. The island is handicapped accessible. A walking path encircles the island and picnic tables are provided. Visitors should observe the “carry in and carry out” practice for trash. No overnight camping is allowed.

“This site is very popular and many families used it last summer and fall,” said Pete Chamberlain, environmental engineer at the Androscoggin Mill. “As part of the annual Source to the Sea Canoe Trek, canoeists will stop at the site in July. And that’s just one example of how recreational users take advantage of the site. As the river has become cleaner over the years, it has become an important area for many types of recreational activity. International Paper enhanced access at several locations along the river, including Pine Island.”
