Work on Auburn railroad crossings this week could cause some traffic delays.

Auburn Public Work Director Bob Belz said both city and Guilford Railroad crews are scheduled to be working around four railroad crossings in the city.

Guilford Railroad crews are scheduled this week to begin upgrading the crossings at Library Avenue – near the Auburn City Building – and at Hampshire Avenue and Spring Street.

“They’re all being upgraded to include the rubberized grade crossing,” Belz said. “We’re doing some work on the approaches to the crossings, making sure they match.”

Belz said Auburn Sewer District crews would be replacing a section of pipe near the railroad crossing at High Street and Minot Avenue.

“My guess is that they’ll have to close the intersection for a while,” he said.

Crews are also scheduled to finish laying a new storm sewer line along Granite Street this week. They should begin repaving that stretch of road next week, according to City Engineer Steve Ranney.

Belz said those projects should be the bulk of the road work throughout the rest of the month. Crews will be performing spot repairs and road sweeping around the city but will wait until the next fiscal year – set to begin July 1 – to begin more paving projects.

In Lewiston, crews working the Gulley Brook Storm Sewer project will be working on Walnut Street and portions of Webster Street this week, according to Assistant Public Works Director Dave Jones. Crews will also be continuing storm drain work along College Street.

Jones said crews should begin tearing up Adams Avenue between Bartlett and Park streets in earnest this week.

“That involves tearing up the pavement and redoing everything, from storm sewers to pavement,” Jones said. “That’ll probably last a good part of the month.”

Crews are also scheduled to begin prepping Randall Road for paving work next week and testing Pond Road between Webster and Sheffield streets for paving work later this summer.

Turnpike drivers can look forward to lane closures daily on the Maine Turnpike south of Auburn from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Crews are scheduled to begin pavement rehabilitation work between Auburn Turnpike exit 12 and Gray exit 11 this week.

They’ll be preparing the pavement between Gray and exit 10 north of Portland for rehabilitation next week. Both operations will cause delays, according to the Maine Turnpike Authority.
