WAYNE – The students in the third, fourth and fifth grades at the Wayne Elementary School have completed a year-long ornithology research project.
Since January the students have devoted part of their weekly class time to research and art work about birds and bird watching. The students also painted three large art panels of Wayne birds and their habitats with guest artist Lois Strickland of Pownal.
The paintings will be on display from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Wayne Elementary School art show and again at the Cary Memorial Library beginning June 20.
A school booklet, “Our Year with Birds,” will accompany the paintings. The 30-page booklet includes an introduction by Ron Joseph, a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the students’ description of the project, a check list of birds and bird watching spots in Wayne and Winthrop and historical information about Wayne ornithologist Olin Sewall Pettingill Jr.
The booklet can be purchased for $3 (covers printing costs) at the library or at the school. For additional information contact Linda McGuire or Theresa Kerchner, Wayne Elementary School, 685-3634.
