BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) – A Putney man is accused of stealing $4,000 worth of maple syrup from a store and reselling it to a wholesaler.

Stephen Bain, 49, was arrested last week in connection with a theft in May from the Dwight Miller Orchards in Putney.

Windham County Sheriff’s Deputy Sherwood Lake, Jr., said that Bain is accused of taking about 90 gallons of the maple syrup sometime between May 21 and 22 – about 1,000 of syrup.

“There were seven five-gallon jugs, and the rest were one- and half-gallon jugs,” Lake said. He estimated the value of the stolen maple syrup at about $4,000.

There was no one in the store at the time of the burglary, said Lake, and there was no damage to the building.

Bain reportedly sold the syrup to a local wholesaler before May 23, when a search warrant was executed at his home, said Lake.

All but one of the containers sold to the wholesaler had the Dwight Miller Orchards name scraped off, Lake said.

He said Bain was arrested May 22. No charges have been filed in the case, but Bain has other larceny charges pending against him.

Bain is also being investigated for his alleged role in a burglary at a Westminster home, said Lake. When Bain’s home was searched, Lake said deputies found jewelry, coins, and other items from that house.

“There were all antique and estate jewelry,” he added. “Gold, antique watches, coins that date back to the 1800s.”

Windham County State’s Attorney Dan Davis said his office is prosecuting Bain for larceny charge stemming from an April 21 incident in which Bain reportedly took plants from Agway in Brattleboro.

Davis said he has not filed charges against Bain in connection with the maple syrup theft.
