PERU – It took less than 10 minutes for voters to unanimously approve taking $6,880 from surplus as a match for a $20,849 grant to develop a town growth plan.

The original article called for raising the money but Selectman Jim Pulsifer made a motion to amend it to take it from the $600,000 surplus account.

The article also authorized selectmen to contract with the State Planning Office for the grant and contract as necessary for materials and services needed to achieve the purposes of the grant.

One voter asked how much surplus money the town had and was told approximately $600,000. Another asked if it mattered where the matching money came from and was told it did not.

Though the money has been appropriated, the town is not required to spend all of it. It is available to hire outside consulting, if necessary. Many tasks will be performed by local volunteers. Bill Hines is chairman of the local planning group.

Constable Vera L. Parent called the meeting to order, and Bill Gates was elected moderator.

There were approximately 33 people filling the Rockemeka Grange Hall.
