AUBURN – Peter Drinkwater, manager of the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport, will step down later this month to take a job in California.

“There have been some changes in my personal plans,” Drinkwater said. “My wife and my son are no longer joining me here in Maine. They’re staying in California and that’s not an acceptable situation.”

Drinkwater came to the Auburn airport in September 2001. Previously, he had served as the general manager at the Ontario International Airport in Ontario, Calif. In his new job as director of the San Diego County airport system, he will manage eight medium-sized airports.

“I’ll be taking a very good job, but I will miss Auburn,” Drinkwater said. “The board of directors are very responsive and it has been very rewarding to work with them.”

During his time, Drinkwater helped complete the installation of an emergency backup generator at the airport and led pavement and pothole repairs.

Board Chairman Ed Plourde said the airport will advertise nationally to find his successor. He expects to announce a new general manager by August.
