AUGUSTA – Based on the seedings heading into Saturday’s Class C state championship at Alumni Field, it would have been a major upset had anyone denied Falmouth their first boys’ title since 1978 or kept the John Bapst girls’ from defending their 2002 championship.
As expected, both schools dominated the competition and took their respective championship plaques for a victory lap at the end of a warm, windy and damp day. The prize for the upset-minded, it turned out, was the runner-up positions.
The Winthrop girls and Foxcroft Academy boys provided the only surprises in what was a fairly predictable finish. Foxcroft collected 60 points, 22 behind Falmouth but plenty to give them some cushion ahead of Traip Academy (49) as the day wound down.
The Ramblers, meanwhile, tallied 59.833 points, second to John Bapst’s 81 and just ahead of third-place Falmouth’s 56.5 points.
“They did a great job. They were seeded third and everyone did better than they were supposed to do,” Winthrop coach Norm Thombs said. “We knew we didn’t have a realistic shot at John Bapst. At a meet like this, they’re just so strong at relays, that it’s hard to overcome that point spread.”
True to their expectations, Winthrop excelled in the field events, nabbing a first place in the pole vault by Teryn Clark (8-feet-6-inches) and the discus by Anne Trenholm (95-10).
“We don’t have many runners, but we have a lot of depth in the field events,” said Clark, who also finished fifth in the triple jump.
Lindsey Leclerc and Kenzie Demkowicz chipped in with top-five finishes in the pole vault, while Trenholm contributed some crucial points in the shot put.
“Anne Trenholm finishing second in the shot put was a surprise, and then Kaitlynn Dunn, third place in the 300 hurdles, that really helped things out,” Thombs said. “Overall, it was just a typical Winthrop team effort.”
“It was a pretty tough day to throw,” Trenholm said. “Most of the girls were fazed by the narrow throwing area in the discus. It was just about focusing. I knew my teammates needed me to do well. Our goal was to place high today.”
Wind and intermittent showers kept times up and distances down, though new state records were set by Falmouth’s Brandon Bonsey in the 1,600 meter run (4:18.51), Madison’s George Yodice in the 110 meter high hurdles (15.10) and the John Bapst girls in the 4×400 relay. Dirigo’s Jasmine Brooks (7:35.65) missed Hillary Easter’s one-year-old record in the 1,600 meter racewalk by just .65 of a second.
NYA and Orono rounded out the rest of the top five. Dirigo finished seventh, Lisbon tied for 11th, Elan placed 19th in a tie with Poland, followed by Livermore Falls (21st), Telstar (24th) and Mt. Abram (26th).
Originally overwhelming favorites in the boys’ meet, Falmouth saw a conference rival raise some doubts about its invincibility last week. The Yachtsmen were looking over their shoulder early in the day to see if it would carry over to the state meet.
“I thought Traip was really scary coming in. They beat us last week in our conference meet,” said Falmouth coach Danny Paul. “They had a couple of tricky spots, and with us, almost every place we were supposed to finish we did. I had us getting 83 points and we ended up scoring 82.”
Traip faltered early, so Falmouth’s closest pursuer was Lisbon. The Greyhounds trailed the Yachtsmen by nine points after eight events due in large part to the courageous performance in the 1,600 race walk by Troy Clark, who overcame a hip injury he suffered three weeks ago to beat Elan’s Zach Kinzer by eight seconds with a time of 7:16.06.
“I just wanted to take it easy because I had other events after,” said Clark, a junior. “It bothered me for like the first lap and I thought about dropping out, but eventually it just went numb.”
Clark felt good enough to compete in the 4×800 relay later and helped the Greyhounds finish fourth.
Bucksport and Sacopee Valley rounded out the top five overall. Lisbon placed in a tie for seventh. Winthrop, with second place finishes by Derek Grey (long jump) and Rob Michaud (triple jump) tied for ninth with Livermore Falls, which benefited from individual state crowns by Travis Tardif in the shot put (49 feet) and Shawn Demaray in the javelin (159-07). Elan took 11th, Telstar 17th, Poland 21st, Mt. Abram 23rd, and Dirigo 29th.
