Tony Poirier’s volunteerism recognized

RUMFORD – Selectmen honored Tony Poirier Thursday night for his many years of volunteerism to the town.

Poirier was named the Citizen of the Year. His name will join others etched on a brass and wood plaque on display in the Municipal Building.

“This is a person who builds things up. Tony is a person who is an example of citizens who do something good for the town,” Selectman Jolene Lovejoy said.

More than 30 friends and family members turned out to show their appreciation for Poirier’s more than 50 years of volunteer activity at the board meeting. He was nominated by his daughter, Louise Stickney.

Throughout the years, Poirier has served on the Rumford Hospital Board of Trustees, the Oxford Federal Credit Union Board, donated countless hours to the Chisholm Ski Club and given many more hours to a variety of activities that contributed to the betterment of the town. He was also crucial to the development of the addition to Rumford Hospital.

Poirier said he was honored by the community recognition.

“The one who needs recognition is my wife, Lilian, who has always stood behind me,” he said. “I thank the rest of the family who have always stood behind me, too. For more than 50 years, I’ve been doing volunteer work and I’ve enjoyed it all. Some has been taxing, but I’ve always enjoyed it. I don’t plan to quit yet,” he said to a round of applause.

Each year, town officials honor someone who has helped make the town better. Besides adding Poirier’s name to the Municipal Hall plaque, he was also given a commemorative plaque.
