RUMFORD – The Rumford Fire Department has worked with youngsters for years, teaching them about fire prevention.

Now, they want to help the elementary schools by gathering school supplies for them.

John Gannon, a firefighter and organizer for the fund-raiser, said starting on Monday the firefighters’ union, Local 1601, will begin gathering pens, pencils, notebooks, paper, crayons and other such things for elementary children attending school at Rumford, Meroby and Virginia elementary schools and at St. Athanasius/St. John School.

“This is another way to get involved with area schools,” said Gannon.

The union will place ads in local newspapers periodically, asking for donations of school supplies, as well as distribute flyers throughout the area.

Those wishing to make donations of supplies or cash may drop them off at the fire station on Congress Street.

Any cash donated will be used to buy supplies, said Gannon.

Larger donations, such as binders, folders and calculators, will be given to students whose families may have a tough time financially, making it difficult to buy such supplies for their children. Qualified students will be identified by their schools. All other supplies will be distributed to classrooms.

This is a first-time fund-raising activity. If it goes well, Gannon said it may become an annual event.

School supply donations will be accepted at the fire station until early September.
